Otters are generally nocturnal, but on some of the west
coast regions of Scotland this is not always the case.
The otter is known as a semi-aquatic species, and can live
on sea coasts or by rivers and lakes.
Coastal otters have fur to keep them warm, and need to have
a fresh water supply nearby so that they can clean the salt
from their fur regularly.
Otter spraints have a distinctively sweet, musky smell, and
they probably mark an otters range which can be an area of
up 20 kilometres of river habitat.
